Tripods with Attitude

I actually love using a little tripod for my little point-and-shoot camera but I really never have the space in my purse or diaper bag to carry one. The DigiDudes seem to be a perfect, and fun, solution!

The DigiDudes are portable camera tripods and keychains in one. But the DigiDudes aren’t just any tripod keychain…these little guys are sporting some must-have attitudes!!! The five different DigiDudes each come with their own look and attitude: Snot Buster, Pinky Scorsese, G-bling-Money-Son, 1iChomp, and BoltBot. It is hard to choose a favorite but I’m pretty partial to Snot Buster!

So, yes, the DigiDude tripods are cute but are they functional? They seem to be. I have not actually tested one out yet as they are still in production and available for pre-order.

The DigiDudes do seem very convenient and cute though! The keychain feature makes them easily storable on your purse, camera bag or diaper bag. Then, when you need the tripod, simply unscrew the DigiDude (leaving his head still attached to your bag), pull out his retractable legs, and attach your camera. This is a great way to get your great photos and do away with shaky hands and blurry pictures, all without carrying around awkward tripods.

DigiDudes will easily mount most point-and-shoot cameras and flipcams. I would love to try this with my point-and-shoot and Flip video camera. I think the DigiDude tripod would work great for setting up my Flip video to do video blogs and for doing those group or self-photos (you know, the ones where you have to ask the waitress to take the picture of your group for you). With the DigiDudes you can easily take the tripod out, attach your camera, set the timer, and smile (or begin doing your video blog entry).

At $19.99 the DigiDudes seem to be a fun, useful, and affordable product. You can currently pre-order your DigiDude at Quirky.com. Once they reach their product pre-sale threshold, they will contact you and your little guy will ship to you in about 6 weeks. Oh, and shipping is free!!!

TomTom for your iPhone

I’ve never been a GPS kind of girl. I’ve never owned one and I can’t say that I’ve even ever used one. But I know quite a few people (especially my family) who would literally be lost without theirs!

I am, however, constantly using maps and I find myself using the Map application on my iPhone almost daily — looking up addresses, searching for the nearest rest stop on our long car trips, or just trying to figure out the fastest route home because my kids need a nap, now! And, while the Map app has served it’s purpose for me, I wonder how, if at all, the new TomTom iPhone app might complete my life even more…

It appears as though the TomTom iPhone app runs just like a stand alone TomTom, offering 3D navigation and spoken turn-by-turn directions. So, why buy just the app and not an actual TomTom? Well, cost and the cool-factor, of course. But, for someone like me, it may have more to do with the idea of having one less thing cluttering up your car and the portability. With the iPhone app you can simply take your GPS with you regardless of what car you are riding in and you will always have the GPS with you, even if you didn’t think you would need it. Think about the next time you are riding with a friend and they are convinced they know where they are going….but they really don’t. Now you have your TomTom right there with you in your iPhone.

Because I haven’t actually been able to test out the app yet and have not physically compared it to the performance of a stand-alone TomTom, I invite you to check out this video by recombu.com:

Now, even though I did mention the cost above, the cost of the TomTom iPhone app is not cheap. Ringing in at $99.99 for the US/Canada version, the app may be just too pricey for most consumers, especially if you are already a TomTom owner (pricing varies depending on the country version you purchase). Now, if you are like me and currently don’t own a TomTom (or any other GPS) and are or are going to be an iPhone owner, the TomTom app is a reasonable purchase. Currently stand-alone TomToms range from $119 for the most basic and primitive model to $449.95 for the deluxe model.

Another drawback on the TomTom iPhone app is that, well, it is still your phone. If you happen to get a phone call while driving your mapping is interrupted until you finish your call, where it puts you right back on course. This isn’t a problem if you’re not expecting calls or if your calls are short but for those people like my sister who consider car time a great time for lengthy phone conversations, this might not be the best option.

Despite the few minor drawbacks I do think that the TomTom iPhone app will become a favorite among travelers. I do hope they drop the price a little though. I just can’t see, personally, dropping $99.99 on an app for my phone yet. Especially when I would want to then purchase the TomTom car kit as well!

Again, the TomTom iPhone app runs $99.99 (US/Canada version, other country versions are available) and is downloadable for your iPhone 3G or 3GS at http://iphone.tomtom.com.

If you are a TomTom owner and/or you have downloaded and used the TomTom iPhone app, I’d love to hear what you thought!

Netbook vs. Notebook – Where do you stand?

After I wrote the last post on the new Disney Netpal I thought I should backtrack and talk about how the netbook differs from the ever-popular laptop.

The netbook is a relatively new product in the computing world. Developed out of our desire, as consumers, to be ultra-portable and ultra-small, the netbook achieves both of these desires.

Generally speaking, netbooks seem to be that missing link between the smart phone and the laptop (or notebook). People are drawn to these mini-laptops by there smaller size (7″-10″ screen) and weight (XX), as well as costing less, on average, than a standard laptop. Netbooks are currently priced starting at $299 whereas laptops are priced anywhere between $350 – $2000*. And, just as laptops vary in price, they also vary in screen size (11.1″ – 18.4″) and weight (3 lbs – 12.5 lbs).

So, if it is smaller and cheaper, why isn’t everyone running out to buy one? Well, that is where we really look at the differences between the Netbook and the Notebook.

The netbook prides itself on portability. It is designed for people on the go. For people who don’t want to be carrying around a big laptop bag. With the compact size the netbook easily fits in most women’s purses!!!

The netbook was not designed to be a “work” computer. Netbooks are great for surfing the web, checking and sending emails, updating your blog, and other social media tasks, but they are not designed to run large programs. Sure, you can run Microsoft Office (you’ll need an external CD drive to install it) but you won’t be running Photoshop or Flash any time soon. The netbooks just don’t have the power to run the more professional programs. And gaming is very limited as well.

As I mentioned above, the netbooks are also lacking any internal CD or DVD drive, much like there predecessor the MacBook Air. This, of course, is easily remedied by purchasing an external drive. I just thought I would mention it!

So, the netbook pros: Very small and portable. Easily slides into your purse or just carry it as a fashion accessory. Comes in a plethora of colors and styles and are designed for speedy web browsing. But the best part is the really affordable price!

And…the netbook cons: The size is a plus but after a while it’s nice to be browsing on a bigger screen. It’s amazing how much bigger even a 13 inch screen feels when you’ve been working on a 7 inch screen all day. The limited processing power and storage space is also a pretty big con for me. My entire existence is on my laptop (backed up to hard drives, of course). I find myself running multiple applications at a time and editing photos while browsing the web or blogging. Even while traveling I am often trying to get some work stuff done. Lastly, the limited battery life/size could be seen as a con for some people if you are always on the go and aren’t able to plug-in and recharge often. I can easily overlook that one though.

Really launching themselves into the consumer world in 2008, many people were skeptical if the netbook would even find a niche. With ultra-small laptops like the MacBook Air already on the market and the known limitations of the netbook, who would actually opt for the netbook? Lots of people! And a lot of computer and design companies are jumping on the Netbook Bandwagon!

I have noticed that the netbook is increasingly popular with moms and with students. The moms can easily toss the netbook into their purse or diaper bag, taking it with them as they wait for their child at the orthodontist or hockey practice. Students like the netbook because of it’s affordability, compact size, and style. They can choose from an assortment of colors and designs and can even go with a Disney or Nickelodeon themed netbook. They can truly have a computer that fits their personality! And, because the netbooks are easily stored in backpacks or lockers, it is actually preferred by some schools for their students to have netbooks instead of the “bulky” laptops.

So, while I do believe that there is definitely a place in the market for the netbook, I do not believe that they will replace the notebooks any time soon. If anything, I think it will cause developers and companies to really look at the design of their notebooks. And, while I would love to have a netbook (because I could always use more gadgets), I think my computing needs are met through my notebook and smartphone.

*prices are always subject to change and are dependent upon brand, specs, sales, deals, and promotions.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this. Do you own a netbook? Did you make the switch from Notebook to Netbook? Let us know your experience!

If Cinderella had a netbook

At the end of July I attended the annual Blogher conference, this year being held in Chicago. My intentions for attending was to further develop my blogging. I really was not expecting to see any new gadgets while there but, to my surprise, gadgets were definitely there!

The gadget that most caught my eye while weaving my way around the expo floor was the new Disney Netbook — The Disney Netpal.

The Netpal is the result of a collaboration between Disney Consumer Products and ASUS, maker of the Eee PC netbook. Of course, coming from Disney, the Netpal was developed with kids in mind. The durable netbook is small (8.9″ screen and weighing approximately 2.5 pounds), comes in two stylish designs — Disney Princess Pink and Disney Magic Blue — and is packed with a ton of fun features for kids:

          *  Disney Desktop featuring a 2D “gadget tray” that displays bold visual application icons
          * 15 easily-accessible widgets
          * More than 10 customizable desktop themes from Disney Princesses and Toy Story to
             Hannah Montana and JONAS The Series.
          * Disney Mix – music and media management
          * Disney Pix – photo customization and organization
          * And tons of games!

The Disney Netpal was also developed with parents in mind! The durable design includes a spill-proof keyboard and ShockShield data protection. They say the battery life is 5 hours but that will all depend on what applications your child is running. You can also create a web-safe environment on the Netpal with 40 parental control options, allowing you the option to limit what sites your child as access to, pre-select email correspondence options, and even pull data to see how your child is spending their time online.

The Tech Specs:

          * Operating System: Genuine Windows XP Home
          * Display: 8.9″ LED-backlit WSVGA screen
          * CPU: Intel ATOM N270
          * WLAN: 802.11 b/g/n
          * Memory: DDR2 SO-DIMM 1GB
          * Storage: 160GB HDD (SSD on some models)
          * Interface: (1) VGA port, (3) USB 2.0 ports, (1) LAN RJ-45, (2) audio jacks
          * Camera: 0.3 M Pixel
          * Audio: Hi-definition audio CODEC, built-in audio stereo speakers, analog mic
          * Dimensions: 248mm (W) x 173mm (D) x 28.7mm (H)
          * Weight: 1.2kg with battery (1kg with battery on some models)

All in all, I think this is a pretty cute and functional portable computer for kids. They are marketing the Netpal to kids ages 6-12, although I think my 3 year old would navigate it just fine. They are currently priced at $349.99 and are available at Toys”R”Us and Amazon.com. The price seems a little high to me but you are paying for the creativity and uniqueness that Disney had injected into the netbook.

I think the Disney Netpal is going to be on the must-have list for most kids this Christmas!
